Leadership in Tribal Government Is a Different Job

A tribal department director answers to the community, the staff, the elected officials, the enterprise that funds the government, the other tribal programs, the law, and whatever happens next. Corporate leadership training is written for someone with one boss. These courses are written for someone with seven.

Emerging Leaders and Supervisor Leadership Certificates

Emerging Leaders Certificate: for staff preparing to step into a supervisory role. What changes when you are responsible for other people’s work, communication, time, and the first hard conversation. Two days.

Supervisor Leadership Certificate: for first line supervisors. Setting the standard, performance conversations, documentation, fairness, and the supervisor as the person the staff actually learn the job from. Two days.

Management Development and Leadership Communication Certificates

Management Development Certificate: for managers of programs and departments. Budgets, Council and administration relations, hiring, discipline, and running the department instead of being run by it. Three days.

Leadership Communication and Influence Certificate: presenting to Council, writing for the administrator, talking to the community, and the conversations leaders avoid. One day.

Leading Teams and Organizational Effectiveness Certificate

For leadership teams rather than individuals: alignment, accountability, culture, and the Culture Health Scorecard applied to the team’s own department. Two days, delivered to an intact team.

Who Should Attend

Supervisors, managers, directors, and program coordinators across tribal government, housing, public safety, and enterprise. Staff identified for promotion. Leadership teams going through a reorganization or a new Council.

Who teaches: every course is taught in person, on site or at the Native Learning Center, by Dr. William R. Latchford, DCJ, retired Executive Director of Public Safety and Chief of Police for the Seminole Tribe of Florida, and by NPKCG instructors who have run the departments the course is for. No webinars, no slide readers.

What Participants Leave With

  • An NPKCG certificate of completion for each program
  • A personal leadership action plan written during the course
  • The Peacekeeper Leadership Profile where the Tribe chooses to include it

Questions We Hear on Every Call

Is there college credit? NPKCG is working with a university partner on credit for its leadership programs. Until that is final, participants receive an NPKCG certificate of completion. Ask and we will tell you where it stands.

Can the courses be combined? Yes. Most Tribes run Emerging Leaders and Supervisor Leadership as a single week, or build a six month cohort with one course day a month.
